Ward was invited by the Cambridge Union at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom to debate the proposition that “Nuclear weapons have made the world safer.”
Prior to the debate, a straw poll was taken where a clear majority was in favor of the proposition. Afterward the proposition lost by more than three to one.

Ward debates Sir Lawrence Freedman, KCMG, CBE, PC, FBA, distinguished author of The Evolution of Nuclear Strategy (among many others), professor emeritus of Kings College London, often called “dean of British strategic studies,” and advisor to governments. The debate was called “Are Nuclear Weapons Still Fit for Purpose?” and took place in 2013at Chatham House in London.
